Ways to Drastically reduce your carbon footprint

I've really been fascinated by the Zero Waste movement the past few months and have decided to reevaluate my lifestyle. There are a million reasons why we should be conscious about our impact on the environment, and if you're reading this I probably don't have to tell you about the impact humans are having on this planet. There are simple ways we can drastically reduce our carbon footprint, and most of them won't impact your life that much. I believe that sustainability is possible without drastically changing your lifestyle. Here are 5 ways to drastically reduct your carbon footprint

1. Shop for quality

I feel a certain amount of anxiety about walking into a Forever 21. Sure the clothes are cheap, but they disintegrate after four or five washes. Buying things with a very short lifespan is a complete waste of money and resources. I use to laugh at people who bought $50 t-shirts because it just felt so wasteful. But if you're buying a $10 t-shirt every month, you're spending so much more money in the long run.

2. Fix things when they break

We have this weird mentality in the US to throw things away whenever they break. There was that saying in Brave New World, "The more stitches, the less riches," but that simply isn't the case. Taking the time to repair things makes me care about something more. I'm sure there's a tutorial out there for anything, so next time you get a snag, rip, or break get to researching diy fixes.

One example, Texas summers are insanely hot, so I had these five shirts with massive pit stains and was really close to throwing them out last month when I was going through my closet. Instead I went online and found advice to mix dish soap, baking soda and hydrogen peroxide onto it before washing and I was amazed. These were some of my favorite shirts and by simply fixing them I was able to not have to buy new ones.

3. Eat less meat

This is something I've really been struggling with and my progress has been slow. Since January I've been cutting meat from my diet. I don't plan on becoming full vegetarian, but eating less meat is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint. I've made a few guidelines for myself as I'm trying to eat less meat.
  • I eat vegetarian whenever I go out to eat 
  • Skip meat at breakfast and lunch 
  • Find new favorites at 

4. Switch to a menstrual cup

You wouldn't believe how much waste we produce from periods, which is weird because it's something every woman goes through for the majority of her life. Finally there's a more eco friendly option for when aunt flo is in town. I've been using mine for about three months now and I'll probably never go back to regular pads and tampons. My cup has seriously been life changing. Let me know in a comment below if you're interested in a whole post on menstrual cups, but there's already tons of research out there.

5. Try to extend the life of your trash

A few months ago I completely gutted my closet because I was feeling overwhelmed with the sheer clutter of it all. I had three garbage bags of clothes that just didn't fit me anymore, and before shipping it off to Goodwill I let a few interested friends dig through them. They walked away with tons of clothes that would have likely ended up in the landfill.

Living a more sustainable life doesn't mean having to buy a tiny house and live off the grid. There are tons of great ways to reduce your carbon footprint and even small steps to help are environment can lead us to a more sustainable future.
